All the eggs surveyed were heavier than the weights advertised on their packaging.
The Warehouse Tauranga store manager Andrew Long told the Bay of Plenty Times Easter egg shoppers were generally price driven.
Mr Long said licensed products and certain brands were also good sellers.
"Cadbury is a well-known brand so it sells pretty well.
"Based on what people are buying, brands like Dora and Skylanders Giants are selling really well. We've also got Barbie and Cars which are pretty popular, and Angry Birds."
For the adults, Mr Long said there was also a range of scorched almond-type eggs. Other popular Easter options included boxes of Favourites chocolates.
Specialty chocolate store Silky Oak Chocolates manager Monika Schaffner said marshmallow eggs were popular.
"People get the taste for them, they are the best ones.
"The bunnies and hollow eggs are also popular, plus we also sell Easter baskets and other gifts.
"We get very busy around this time of year because we sell good quality chocolate."
Welcome Bay mother Briar Morreel said she had bought her two pre-school age children a range of different eggs so they could enjoy an Easter egg hunt.
"I've got them some marshmallow eggs and hollow eggs and of course one of the bunnies each. For some reason my kids just love the bunny ones, I think they like biting the ears off. While they love their eggs, I think they love the boxes just as much."
Mrs Morreel said price was a factor in which eggs she chose.
"For us personally, it's price and what you're getting for your money. I'd love to buy them the Cadbury ones but, fortunately, they're young at the moment so chocolate is chocolate."
Comments on the Bay of Plenty Times Facebook page indicated parents found buying eggs for their children hard due to health issues.
One mother said her son had severe food allergies, making Easter the worst time of year.
"At least with Christmas I can buy him a marshmallow Santa sack or a lolly one, but Easter is all about chocolate.
"There is only one egg on the market my son can have ... however it is $20 for one small egg."
