A Tauranga man who robbed a female Kiwibank teller of $900 after trying to divert police attention by making a false bomb scare has been jailed for four years and three months.
Brendan Steve Allan, 30, who pleaded guilty to a charge of aggravated robbery on June 29 was sentenced in Tauranga District Court yesterday by Judge John Clapham.
The robbery at the Tauranga Postshop/Kiwibank on the corner of Cameron Rd and 11th Ave unfolded on the afternoon of June 22 not long after a Tauranga City Council staff took a call at 3.17pm from Allan who said a bomb was set to explode in the library in 20 minutes.
As a result of the call police evacuated the library and nearby buildings and cordoned off the surrounding area.
When Allan was arrested at short time later in Turret Rd he had a knife in his backpack which he told the teller he would use to "stab someone"if she did not co-operate.
