A medal awarded to Senior Constable Bryce Cockerton last Wednesday marked his long service and good conduct in 14 years as a police officer.
Colleagues and police volunteers helped him celebrate over afternoon tea and drinks at the Waihi police station - together with Mr Cockerton's wife Anne-Maree, and 3-year-old daughter Bridie who was excited about going to "Dad's party".
While he joked that the well-wishers must be "paid actors", Mr Cockerton's contributions to the community have been much appreciated, said Waihi Beach station volunteer Graham Tillson.
Mr Cockerton, 41, has worked in the Waihi area for nine years - the last three as officer in charge of the two-man Beach station - after moving from Hamilton.
The self-described "country boy" said the support of excellent volunteers has been a highlight of his small-town role.
Formerly a builder, he joined the force in April 1996 "for a change".
Senior Sergeant Rex Knight described Mr Cockerton as an unflappable, consistent and reliable officer who if given a task, could be counted on to carry it out within 24 hours, and typically by the end of the shift.
"Fourteen years in any job - let alone the police - is something special," said Mr Knight. "These days, police are not only fighting crime, but a raft of social problems daily."
As well as a medal, Mr Cockerton has earned his Senior Constable's stripe.
