A person has been held at gunpoint and had their car taken in rural Tauranga.

The victim was on Oropi Rd about 7am yesterday and was forced to hand the car over to a man holding a pistol.

Tauranga police Detective Sergeant Alan Kingsbury said the victim was not hurt and the two people were known to each other.

About 10.50am, police spotted the car parked behind the Mobil service station on Cameron Rd.

Kingsbury said armed police searched the car and found a firearm and ammunition inside. Three people were taken into custody.

A local man in his 20s will face charges of aggravated robbery, and a local woman aged 32 will face charges of theft, and another man was released without charge.

The accused will appear in the Tauranga District Court at a later date.
