A man who armed himself with large knives before barricading himself inside a Tauranga home has been arrested.

The man sparked a heavy police callout on Cameron Rd, Gate Pa, this morning.

Senior Sergeant Glenn Saunders said police responded to a domestic incident just before 11am and found the man by himself at the address.

Mr Saunders said police could see the man had armed himself with the two large knives when they arrived, prompting police to call in negotiation experts.

"They got in and spoke to the man and AOS (Armed Offender Squad) were summoned, however, the he exited the address and was arrested before AOS arrived."

The man was taken into custody about 12.10pm.

He has been charged with wilful damage, possession of an offensive weapon and breaking a police safety order.

The man's partner was not inside the property, Mr Saunders said.
