A group has approached Tauranga City Council with a proposal to build an aquarium in Tauranga.

Councillor Max Mason said the group had asked for confidentiality for now due to commercial sensitivities.

The proposal will be discussed in a closed-door workshop with the council's economic development and investment committee on Monday. It will not be the first time plans for an aquarium for the city have been floated.

The late Mike Firth, a Tauranga-based Academy Award-nominated film director, spent years planning a 3D marine film cinema and aquarium for Marine Park at Sulphur Point, the Bay of Plenty Times reported in March 2016

It was championed by Priority One and Tourism Bay of Plenty and the council was briefed, but the project appeared to lose traction after Firth died in October 2016.

A marine aquarium - Marineland, was built on the island of Moturiki, off Mount Maunganui Main Beach, in 1966, but it closed in 1981 and was replaced by fun park venture, Leisure Island, which closed in 1990.
