This week a frenzied debate about dog breeds began online following our story about the Tauranga man who needed surgery after been bitten by a dog which appeared to be a pit bull terrier cross.

Pitbull fans came out in force with the old platitude "it's not the dog, it's the owner". Or how their pitbull is a cuddly best pal. Or how any dog, even a chihuahua, can bite. I have never come across a friendly pitbull nor heard of people needing plastic surgery after a chihuahua bite.

Pitbull supporters refuse to admit that certain dog breeds have fighting instincts and whatever training, pats or dog biscuits they are given, they still might snap off the hand that feeds them or anyone else who just happens to be going about their day.

American pitbulls and their crosses feature high in biting statistics. People who want to own one have questionable motives for wanting to own such a potentially harmful animal.

We cannot trust all owners to get these dogs registered never mind keep them muzzled or on a lead.

The Government should stop pussyfooting around the issue and ban highly dangerous breeds.
