26mm rain dumped on city

Tauranga experienced more rain in 24 hours this week than in the previous fortnight.

MetService media and communications meteorologist Daniel Corbett said 26mm of rain had fallen on the centre in the 24 hours up until 5pm yesterday.

In total, 13.8mm of rain had fallen in Tauranga for the month before the downpour.

The rain pelted the city as the remnants of tropical cyclone June passed over the city.

The Tauranga Coastguard was called to assist three people trapped on their boat in Tauranga harbour last night.

It was believed the three people called for help because they did not think they could get back into shore themselves because of the strong winds and choppy conditions. The boat was moored in the middle of harbour.

Police northern communications said the three people were assisted to shore at 8.45pm.

Finer weather is expected for the weekend with highs between 24-25C and blue skies.
