Five tips for safe driving these holidays - from the New Zealand Transport Association
1. Plan ahead and allow enough time to get to your destination safely.
Have enough rest beforehand and share the driving to avoid fatigue. Sort out entertainment and refreshments to keep the kids occupied.
2. Check your car before
hitting the road.

A safe and well maintained car can prevent an accident and protect you if there is one. Check your tyre treads and pressure, it could save your life.
Also remember to check your oil, water and lights. Most garages offer safety checks for tyre tread and pressure, lights, brakes, cooling systems and other components.
A well tuned vehicle is also more fuel efficient so you save money on fuel costs.
Make sure loose articles are safely packed away.
If you're towing, make sure all the couplings are compatible. Also, remember to check the safety chain, trailer lights, tyres and brakes.
3. Drive to the conditions.

Remember the 'conditions' mean more than just the weather.
They also include the state of the road, the traffic, your vehicle, your load, and you - are you stressed or tired?
Take a break.
4. If you're going to drink, plan a safe way home.

Have a sober driver, use public transport, take a taxi or walk if it's safe and practical.
5. Expect the unexpected.
Over the holidays the road environment can be unpredictable.
Keep an eye out for cyclists.
Give them plenty of space.
If you're cycling or motorcycling, make sure you're wearing proper protective gear.
Keep an eye on what's behind you and pull over to let traffic pass.
