Ample Anoraks
I'm not talking about the long, limp macs of old. Chic and sophisticated, a dressy anorak will be your saving grace when you're not sure how the day's weather is going to pan out.
They're breathable and roomy in the right places, just what you'll need to cope with
those swift and volatile temperature changes. Glossy, rich fabrics are commonplace in good anoraks and neutral clay colours and khakis are a great option.
Look for ones with figure-flattering drawstrings at the waist so that you don't look like a blob. It's also a good idea to choose one long enough to cover your outfit underneath to dispel the problem of matching. Roll up the sleeves, add chunky heels and be surprised at how sexy this old faithful friend can look.

Shrug It Off

I couldn't be without my collection of simple shrugs over the next few months, simply because I am too impatient to wait get my sleeveless summer dresses out. I have an array of colours so that they almost become part of the dress you wear them with.
Shrugs range from fuller ones that come to just above the waist, to ones (and these are my personal favourite) that just fit over your arms and across your shoulder blades. The latter don't interfere with the look and feel of the main garment you're wearing. Shrugs are a fabulous alternative to the cardigan which, if you're not careful, can look frumpy and tired.

Shoe Boots

Once again, the new spring/summer shoe collections that we're about to see in store are full of the ingenious shoe-boots. These little saviours take different forms: from peep-toe lace-up booties to knee-high boots with interesting cut-outs. They are made for New Zealand's confused climate and mean you can have the best of both worlds. Wear footless tights or leggings with these for full effect.
Trail Blazer
They do the job of a shrug but add more statement and structure. The waist should have a very snug fit, giving you shape in exactly the right spot. It's better to opt for a size smaller than one that buttons up, but drowns you. The length of the blazer should finish just at the top of the hips, otherwise what is supposed to be a sassy, sexy cover-up will look bulky and boring.
Needs Must
The white shirt is a beautiful, airy essential during spring. It is one of those classics which can be tucked in or belted on its own or over the plethora of bodysuits, with pants or a skirt. Pop the collar for a bit of nonchalant sex appeal.
Pashminas are also ideal, tie them to your handbag when you don't need them and they still look good. Remember to have the fake tan at the ready as you'll start to show a little more skin.
