A comedian making a name for himself as a social commentator is Guy Williams.

He's the master of irony and known for his spot on TV3's Jono and Ben Show.

Williams studied politics at Victoria University and uses his space on the show to fire off shots of satire at the state of things in society.

Williams is in Tauranga this weekend, and a couple of the issues he's going to talk about are sexism and racism. If you are in need of some analysis, lashed with plenty of laughs, head along to his show.

He admits he can come across as a bit condescending, but he says he doesn't mean to. It's just that he's fed up.

For example, he's fed up with politicians pandering to voters.

"I really hate bull****. I feel like so many people are out there manipulating people and it really annoys me.

"I write jokes about things that interest and annoy me. And the great thing about comedy is you can scratch an itch. Comedy is like a weapon that you can use. Sometimes comedy is a good way to punch people in positions of power in my show.

"At the moment New Zealand is a subtly racist and sexist country. Overall we are pretty good, but there are subtle sexist and racist attitudes that exist.

"People come to my shows and they laugh at my observations about our society, but the most cutting jokes are when you make them recognise a joke about themselves - when people go 'that's about me'.

"But I'm also laughing at myself. I'm often guilty of being racist or sexist without knowing it. New Zealand is a great country, but sometimes we are pretty ignorant."

He says he's buoyed by the comedy industry at the moment. He reckons it's flourishing and says although it's not the easiest of jobs, it's a fun way to make a living.

"We are suffering less and less from cultural cringe now. You can never have too many funny gigs and awesome TV shows to watch. Comedy is going through a boom and I'm always encouraging people to have a go. We need more women in the industry though."
