Why cycle from Cape Reinga to Bluff?

"Because we can," says Lyn Taylor, "and now we have the time." Lyn is one half of the "recycled and retyred" Taylor team.

Lyn and Paul Taylor are cycling from the top of North Island to the South's very end at a leisurely 60km a day - taking in all the sights and doing touristy things along the way - on a trip they estimate may take two to three months.

"A lot of people do it but we're not trying to do it fast. We are doing it to enjoy wineries, breweries, cafes ... everything we can really.

"It's subject to weather of course, and we are all retired so we are not going to be busting a gut."

They haven't committed to sponsors nor are they doing it for any reason other than to celebrate their recent retirement. Lyn's brother from New Plymouth suggested they all embark on the epic bike ride and they agreed.

The foursome plan to take a car up north and take turns driving it on their journey. They will cycle predominantly west coast initially, through the Hauraki Plains to Taupo and on to Wellington.

"By the time we organised the North Island it took us ages so for the South Island we will just wing it," Lyn says. But it will probably be mainly the west coast of the South Island, she says.

They will be booking their accommodation two or three nights ahead.

Lyn has been active all her life having done half marathons but she has never cycle raced.

"We have always had bikes and socially done mountain biking so we have always been active, but not competitively. We have only got mountain bikes, not racing bikes."

The pair have been training every day for months now but suffered a setback when Paul had his bike stolen.

Lyn is not looking forward to the hills. "That will be the challenge. The hardest stretch will be the and New Zealand is a hilly country. We know a lot of the North Island so maybe the
South Island will be the biggest challenge - as that is the unknown really."

The trip is on their bucket list but the two aren't that worried if things don't work out.

"Anything could happen along the way and so if we don't make it, who cares? We will come home."

Their journey starts on November 7.
