Hollywood, Bollywood, Wellywood! Will Tauranga come to rival them cinematically in time to come?
The answer may be revealed next Monday evening when the world premiere of Ma's Last Throw is screened.
Produced by members of the Tauranga Video Camera Club, the 15-minute film is the end result of two months' work
by club members keen to do something a little more challenging than viewing and critiquing each other's holiday shots.
They wrote, acted in, directed, shot, and edited the short film over the last two months and now the result is to be revealed. The plot revolves round a darts competition in which "Ma" unexpectedly finds herself making up the numbers and - ultimately - winning in dramatic circumstances.
Club president John Skippen says the exercise has proved to be both fun and challenging for members.
"It has taught us quite a few lessons about the need to plan things carefully and make sure you have everything needed to make a coherent film," he says.
"When we we started editing, which was the longest part of the whole process, we found bits missing that we had to go back and shoot, or create using some technical tricks. But it has been fun and something a little different for members. I think that in the finish it has involved about 30 people."
The premiere screening of Ma's Last Throw will provide the finale of a 45-minute show demonstrating the evolution of moving pictures over the last century.
"Our video is too short on its own," says John. "So the evening will start with silent black and white slapstick, and move through to the advent of movies with sound, introduction of colour film and now video."
Unfortunately the club's rooms are too small to allow the premiere screening to be open to the public, so the event will be restricted to those directly involved in the film's production, and a few invited guests - none of whom are expected to arrive by private executive jet or demand a red carpet from their limousine to the door!
