Mount Militia derby crew hunt for fresh meat

Mount Militia Derby Crew is looking for new members.

Raw meat is on the menu for Mount Militia Derby Crew.

It's not some new diet of raw steak to get the team's aggression up - but a call for more members for the club.

The team is looking for skaters - both men and women - referees and non-skating officials.

This time last year Becky Klein, the Yorkshire Terror, dipped the toe of her skates into the world of roller derby.

"I'd just moved over from England and I was interested in roller derby but didn't know much about it," she says.

"But it looked like a fun sport. I wanted to get fit and I'm not really interested in gyms."

Now she is back for a second season.

"It was the best thing I could have done for me," she says.

The club has an information evening tonight at Groove Bar, Hamilton St, Tauranga, and an initial try-out on January 30 at the Mount Sports Centre, Blake Park at 6pm.

Roller derby is a contact sport played by two teams of five members skating in the same direction around an oval shaped track. Game play consists of a series of short matchups (jams) in which both teams designate a scoring player (the jammer) who scores points by lapping members of the opposing team.

The teams attempt to assist their own jammer while hindering the opposing jammer - playing both offence and defence simultaneously.
