Aged over 50? Stuck in a rut? Looking for something new to do?
For the first time ever, the 50 Plus Lifestyle Show is coming to Tauranga to give baby boomers the opportunity to pick up a new hobby or interest.
Event manager Jeanette Bremner said the expo, to be held Friday and
Saturday at the Queen Elizabeth Youth Centre, is aimed at active seniors and was perfect for people who still had fun and enjoyed life.
"This is for the people who are still really out there and want to get out of their chairs," said Mrs Bremner.
"These people have a different mindset and want to do something with their time."
In previous years, the expo had a strong focus on an ageing population, but this year the event was rebranded and renamed to focus on the more-active baby boomers.
Mrs Bremner said Tauranga was a "changing city" and the rebranded event would better suit the social market and growing younger population.
"We're now focusing it for people 50-65 years of age because these are the ones who are still having fun and enjoying life, not wanting to act their age.
"And the thing is, once you get to that age you realise that 50 or 55 isn't old and you still feel young at heart ... ," she said.
About 55 exhibitors from all over the country will take part in the expo, offering a wide variety of products and services, with plenty to touch, taste, hear, sample and experience.
There will be stalls specific to travel, financial, motorcycles, cars, fitness and health and well-being. A number of local businesses will also be on show.
It brings together the latest products and services in travel, food, fitness, healthcare, leisure activities, gifts, crafts, lifestyle choices and retirement.
Visitors will be able to speak to experts and buy show-only specials.
Guest speaker Wendyl Nissen, who lives by the motto "it's OK to be a nana", will entertain the crowd with her seminar, held at 1pm on both days. She will be speaking about labels of beauty and cleaning products, as well as sharing experiences from her new book Home Companion, due to be released next month.
On Saturday afternoon, staff and visitors will attempt to break two Guinness World Records. The records they aim to break are pairing more than 16 socks in a minute and getting a duvet properly into its cover, and buttoned up, in under 42 seconds.
Mrs Bremner is confident these records will be broken.
For people who wish to attempt to break the records for either of the activities, visitors are able to attend the expo on Friday to practise and return on Saturday free of charge, to participate in the record-breaking attempt at 2pm. The attempts will be documented on film with support from official time-keepers.
The 50 Plus Lifestyle Expo is appearing in two New Zealand locations - Tauranga and Auckland. Entry is $5 per person. Young people (under 21 years of age) who attend with a baby boomer are free.
