Get your frock and get ready to ride

Waihi locals have the chance dress to frill this weekend when Frocks on Bikes takes place this Sunday.

The cycle explorer starts at 10am at the Waihi Beach Hotel and has 5km and 15km options. The family fun event is for the entire community - including the boys.

All you need is a bike, helmet, frock and cheeky grin to complete your ensemble.

The day out usually gets well over 75 people and this year a special drag race for the boys in their Sunday dress is being held.

"The boys have started to 'out-frock' the ladies, so we have added an additional fun extra just for them," says Waihi Beach Community organiser Kelly Moselen.

The event heralds the start of Bike Month in the Bay of Plenty. Next month Sport Bay of Plenty wants to see more people on their bikes and have organised a number of guided tours throughout the region.

Other events include urban rides exploring trails throughout Tauranga and Katikati as well as rides further afield.

A tour from the end of Omanawa Rd to Ngatuhoa Lodge and onto the Te Rere/Oturu Waterfall is on February 12. And on February 19, a ride is planned from the Ruahihi canals to McLaren Falls.
