The benefits of physical activity are well documented.
Research shows that keeping active improves not only physical health but can improve mental wellbeing as well.
Making regular physical activity a part of your life can help you sleep better, feel calmer and be better able to cope with the stresses and demands
of life.
One of the cheapest and easiest ways to keep physically active is to get walking.
In Tauranga we are extremely lucky to have great walking tracks and parks all over the city.
Also available is the City on its Feet walking programme, which offers the opportunity to join a walking group.
Joining a group provides an easy, free, friendly way to get active and stay motivated.
It is also a great way to discover new walkways and tracks around the city that you may not be familiar with.
This month in Tauranga there are a number of walking events and most of them are free.
Breast Cancer Awareness Walk - Wednesday, October 20, 6pm-7.30pm, Masonic Park.
Dress up in pink and join the annual walk for breast cancer awareness.
City on its Feet, Walk the Canals - Wednesday, October 27, 9.30am, The Falls Café, McLaren Falls.
Join the City on its Feet walking groups for a walk around the canals, enjoy the beauty of McLaren Falls.
Live to Play Walking Passport Challenge - Friday, October 29, 11.30am-1.30pm - Tauranga CBD.
Join in the challenge and walk to different checkpoints around the Tauranga CBD. It's a great chance to get together with family and friends, or if you work in the CBD, get out and enjoy your lunch break. Get your passports stamped at various checkpoints to be in the draw to win some great prizes. Checkpoints will operate between 11.30am and 1pm, finishing with a prizegiving and Zumba session at the final checkpoint at 1pm.
Collect your walking passport from Sport Bay of Plenty or Smiths Sport Shoes or download from www.sportbop.co.nz.
For more information on ways you can get walking in Tauranga, contact Nicki Miller, Active Lifestyles Advisor at Sport Bay of Plenty on 07 578 0016 ext 829 or nickim@sportbop.co.nz
