Racing around the final bend and along the home stretch, excitement and adrenaline runs through the veins of racing enthusiasts - which thoroughbred horse will win the race?
This Saturday, people in the Western Bay can enjoy the first event of the "Christmas at the Races" series, held at 25 venues
across the country.
Christmas At The Races was launched at Racing Tauranga four years ago as a unique and exciting way for businesses and social clubs to celebrate together. Since then, the highly-anticipated event has grown each year, with functions selling out months in advance.
Don Paterson, TRAC marketing and sponsorship manager, said guests would be entertained with live music, festive food and exciting thoroughbred racing, including the day's feature race, the Group 3 Stella Artois Tauranga Stakes, worth $70,000.
The day also coincides with the 2010 NZ Cup from Christchurch, which will be broadcast live on the super screen.
Mr Paterson said this weekend's race would allow guests to dress to impress, with festive fascinators, heels and handbags. Men are also expected to don a suit or smart attire.
This year also sees the launching of a new event for the young and young at heart - the Summer Stables Raceday Party - to be held in a large marquee next to the home straight.
It will feature fashion shows, live music in between the races and the chance to win two return flights to Sydney, flying direct from Rotorua International Airport. Tickets to this event are $70, with with proceeds supporting the Tauranga Food Bank.
However, if you're looking for a more relaxed experience, simply bring a blanket and an umbrella and stake your claim to a section of the lawn along the home straight or be in early to grab the few remaining Gazebo spots.
Racing Tauranga has adopted new nationwide guidelines for BYO alcohol. Guests are restricted to one bottle of wine or one dozen beer (stubbies) per person. Kegs, crates, spirits, RTDs and wine casks are not permitted.
