Amelia
(PG), 111 minutes
In a world caught between world wars, Amelia Earhart was a true American hero.
The legendary aviatrix was a pioneer in the air and an example of what women could achieve with hard work and determination.
Set in the Great Depression, the story is about Earhart's
life and love as much as it is about her achievements in the air.
The first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic, Earhart (played by Hilary Swank) became the most famous woman in the world and her relationship with publisher George Putnam (Richard Gere) takes her to great heights.
Apart from her working and deeply personal relationship with Putnam, she also found time to liaise with Gene Vidal (Ewan McGregor), a man who took her breath away.
Conquering the Atlantic was never going to be enough for Earhart and a journey around the world beckoned.
The history books tell the outcome of that adventure.
Swank has an earthiness which brings a certain reality to all the roles she plays. You can sense the fire in her belly that drove the aviatrix on.
Amelia is effectively a period drama without the skyrocketing action scenes all too common in today's movies. It is all about the drama of the events and their success.
