There will be plenty of clowning around and hi-jinks during the second week of the school holidays if Baycourt has anything to do with it.
Baycourt manager Megan Peacock Coyle said the team had pulled together acts and workshops for the whole family to enjoy. "There really is something foreveryone of all ages, including an evening acrobatic workshop just for the mums and dads."
Auckland-based theatre company The Dust Palace literally gets everyone swinging from the ceiling on Monday and Tuesday with two days of workshops aimed at those between 7 to 16 years. "I saw their workshops in Oamaru, and they are fantastic. Not only did the kids have a great time, the parents came away wanting to do them as well."
Children will be able to sample a range of circus arts including aerial silks, hula hoops, acro-balance and come away with skills they never would have imagined. Parents aren't left out of the loop this time, as adult workshops are being held on Monday night from 8.30pm until 9.30pm.
A performance by The Dust Palace will be held on Monday and Tuesday called Top of the Heap. It's a thrilling show confined entirely to the heaped stack of furniture on the set.
The four performers hand balance, clown and contort, telling stories with their bodies.
On Wednesday and Thursday, it's the youngsters turn for entertainment. The Building Block Buddies puts on a crowd pleaser for children aged between 4 to 8 with loveable characters, colourful building blocks, and songs that both children and parents know and love, said Megan.

And finally on Friday, Baycourt has a film-making workshop for ages 8 to 18 focusing on scriptwriting, acting for screen, cinematography and post production. Participants will learn basic start-up skills from working professional film-makers and screen actors, then put them into practice to enter the International Youth Silent Film Festival New Zealand regional competition later this year.
This week is the first of an annual series that Baycourt will host dedicated to children's performing arts. "This is about getting kids engaging in the performing arts, not just being in the audience, but actually taking part, and we have kept the prices as reasonable as possible to get them involved," said Megan.
