Kiwi music icon Dave Dobbyn will headline the Classic Hits Acoustic Church Tour at Holy Trinity Church on Saturday. His performance will be supported by members of Christchurch's up-and-coming band, Dukes.
This is the second time the tour has visited Tauranga - last year it featured Greg Johnson, Boh Runga and
Lydia Cole.
Dobbyn said he was looking forward to the tour and was excited by the ambience and intimacy of churches.
"There are layers of resonance that are ideal for singing. I've always been transported by the sonics of such rooms.
"In performance it allows you to expand the dynamic range without over-playing. I love that challenge."
He will play acoustic guitar and piano on the tour, with Ross Burge on percussion and drums.
Dobbyn, who last year celebrated three decades of music, has a string of hits, including Beside You, Be Mine Tonight, Language, Outlook for Thursday, Loyal, Whaling, Devil You Know, Slice of Heaven, Magic What She Do, Oughta Be in Love, Welcome Home.
Dobbyn holds the most Silver Scroll Awards for songwriting and in 2001 was given a lifetime achievement award by the New Zealand recording industry.
In the tour, Dobbyn promised to play his classic hits and some audience requests.
"Yes, we'll be playing a selection of favourites, along with some choices to hopefully suit the spring season and the lofty ambience of your local temple.
"It is an acoustic gig - but it will rock," Dobbyn said.
The Dukes, LA Mitchell and brothers Jo and Matt Barus, will join Dobbyn on stage for some of the programme, as well as playing their own set.
Dukes' music has been described as infectious, unpretentious and steeped in tradition. Their recent hit Vampires has been a fixture on the airplay charts for more than a year.
Tour promoter Brent Eccles said the lineup was the "perfect union" of established and emerging artists.
"We're thrilled to have Dave on this run; his powerful and true voice will lend itself to the wonderful acoustics in these magnificent churches and cathedrals," he said.
"Churches are unique places for acoustic music - they are built to complement voices and with the exceptional talents of these artists, you have the venues, the artists and the audience - that's the perfect trinity of any great concert."
Now in its second year, the Classic Hits Acoustic Church Tour has expanded to 12 shows in 11 cities. The venues include Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Napier, Palmerston North, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin and Invercargill. New Plymouth and Nelson have been added to the bill.
