Central Deli
Central Parade Shopping Centre
520 Maunganui Rd Mt Maunganui

Central Deli is tucked away in the middle of the Central Parade shops.

Mother and daughter Bronwyn Hopcroft and Jaye Andrade opened the cafe 10 weeks ago and it is already proving popular with locals.

The store is modern and clean - in contrast to the cluttered, rustic look that has become popular lately in the hospitality industry. Minimal furnishings make the cafe feel spacious and crisp.

The cabinet, on the other hand, is stacked full of delicious salads, sandwiches and sweet treats.

A children's play area adds a family-friendly atmosphere to the family-run business. We pick up a Thai beef noodle salad and a toasted spinach, portobello mushroom, roasted red pepper and brie panini.

The food is delivered to our table quickly and tastes as good as it looks.

Every mouthful of the Thai beef salad is full of flavour. The noodles and beef are cooked to perfection. The salad is also packed with capsicum, cucumber, celery and a generous amount of fresh coriander, which gives it an authentic Thai flavour.

The panini, which comes with a delicious tomato relish, is just as good. The filling is generous and a great combination.

The sweetness of the roasted red pepper is a perfect contrast to the salty flavour of the cheese and mushroom.

My hot chocolate is large and comes with marshmallows and a chocolate fish - always a winner with me. Though I don't drink coffee, my partner assures me his flat white hits the spot and leaves him with nothing to complain about.

Our mains are great but it is the custard square that we really rave about. The classic Kiwi treat can be a bit hit and miss but this one is by far the best I have had in many years, if not ever.

The filling actually tastes like custard rather than the flavourless jelly I have come to expect.

It is topped with passionfruit icing, which makes it that little bit different, but does not overpower the custard. The pastry is thin and flaky and serving it with a side of unsweetened yoghurt is a nice touch.

All the food in the cabinet looks just as delicious and the staff are friendly and efficient.
