Carnivorous Plant Society are making tracks around the country throughout February and early March to celebrate the release of their new EP, Phantom Finger. They are set to play at Tauranga Art Gallery on Thursday, March 3, starting at 7pm.
Locals may remember them from the carnival at last year's
National Jazz Festival, where they played two sets on the Coast stage in the afternoon, both very well received.
"The band plays what is best described as cinematic jazz music. It's a little hard to say what the exact genre is, but when you search it up on YouTube you'll get an idea of how great they sound," says the gallery's marketing and media coordinator Martine Rolls.
Led by trumpet and keyboard player Finn Scholes, they coax life from an astounding array of instruments - trumpets, violin, vibraphone, guitar, synthesizers, keyboards, bass, drums, even the odd vocal and some whistling. Don't be surprised to hear a mellophone, flugelhorn, ocarina, tuba and congas, too.
Scholes says there will be plenty of fast instrument changeovers. The audience will also be entertained by cleverly designed animated projection show.
