Bay at heart of study

The Bay of Plenty is the focus of a new Heart Foundation-sponsored study, which will help researchers better understand the burden of cardiovascular disease for New Zealanders.
The study, At the Heart of Healthy Ageing, aims to understand the prevalence of cardiovascular disease for Maori and non-Maori in advanced age, and will focus on 600 non-Maori, aged 85, and 600 Maori, aged 80 to 90, living in eastern and western Bay of Plenty and Rotorua.
The study, led by University of Auckland professor Ngaire Kerse, will follow the 1200 individuals for 10 years. People aged 85 (80-90 for Maori) are still being sought for the study, phone 0800 545 227.
