As the darling buds of spring begin to blossom, it's time to plan an active adventure in our great outdoors.
If you're Christchurch-bound in the coming months and you're keen to stretch your legs, the magnificent Banks Peninsula Track could top your options. The 35km route will carry you over fabulous
farmland, along rugged volcanic coastline, through native bush, past waterfalls and beautiful beaches, and over the Hinewai Reserve, ending in the French resort village of Akaroa.
Opened 20 years ago, this unique track is owned and operated by several families who live on-site. Two options are available to trampers, depending on schedule and fitness level - two-day or four-day excursions.
If you have the time, the four-day tramp is far more leisurely and easier on the calf muscles, plus it serves up an enriching volley of extras. These include the penguin tour at Flea Bay, where you can observe the playful delights of our white-flippered and yellow-eyed friends.
You can also do a spot of kayaking at Flea Bay/Pohatu Marine Reserve, where Hector dolphins and fur seals are prolific.
If you choose the two-day option, be aware that you'll need a good level of fitness, as you'll be walking many more kilometres each day. The highest point on the track is the ascent of Trig GG (699m). However, the lung-busting haul to the summit will reward you with panoramic views across the peninsula and Akaroa Harbour.
One of the true indulgences of the four-day walk is that you can have your pack carried all the way. The overnight huts are adequately equipped with full cooking facilities and barbecues.
So what do you need to take? Sleeping bag, backpack, boots and trusty all-weather clothing. Personal necessities (toiletries, medicines), towel, cash for shops along the track, torch, light indoor footwear, water bottle, swimwear and a daypack (if you are having your pack carried).
Starting from Onuku Farm Hut, Flea Bay and Stony Bay are the first stops - and they're pristine swimming spots. The giant swing at Stony Bay is a perennial crowd-pleaser, too. Then it's on to the Otanerito Beach House and the spectacular hillside tramp through the native bush reserve, before the grand descent into Akaroa.
This really is a wonderful way to see the diverse landscape of this very blessed pocket of New Zealand. Surrender yourself to the ever-changing landscape and nature's soothing bounty.
