A Deep Purple tribute is on at Totara St this Saturday night when Tony Painting and the Power perform with Leon Ruwhiu on vocals.

Paintings spent the better part of the 70s, 80s and 90s working as a musician, touring the many pubs and clubs in the UK.

After the release of his Band of Gypsys album, he was invited to support or play with some of the United Kingdom's best-known artists, including UB40, Jools Holland Big Band, Ozzy Osborne, Ruby Turner and Robert Plant.

He will be playing a two-and-a-half-hour tribute to Deep Purple, covering classic songs from their well-known albums.

"He's definitely the real deal and will put on a fantastic show," says Kingsley Smith, Totora St promoter.

"Leon Ruwhiu does a great job on lead vocals and the whole band is tight and definitely on par with what you'd hope from a world-class Deep Purple tribute band.

"As a musician, you have to be at a certain level technically to do justice to the music, as Deep Purple are world-class."
