Self-taught painter Wayne Vickers' inspiration comes from his love of tramping and hunting. Photo/supplied

Wayne Vickers is a landscape and seascape artist who lives in Papamoa.

He is showing his impressionistic/realistic works from his Papamoa studio and invites the community to view his work this weekend.

Other than a single weekend class, he is a self-taught painter.

"From these early days a seed was planted and hundreds of hours of painting has followed. Along the way through the series of epiphanies, successes and stuff-ups. I have developed a range of techniques, knowledge of materials, combined with a natural talent that has led to the paintings I am creating now.

"The love of the outdoors and the New Zealand back country seeped into my bones from a young age. Moving through the landscape, experiencing the primordial back country, both beautiful and daunting.

"The hanging mist, pierced by shafts of lighting enveloping the lush untouched nature of the New Zealand bush. Then bringing the inspiration home to the studio, playing with multiple layers of oil paint and glazes until the real and imagined become intertwined as one."

He has been painting for nine years, and many paintings are now held in private collections both locally and all over the world. Many paintings are sold into Australia, the UK, United States and Dubai.

Together with his wife Isabel, they have created a studio with a gallery-style hanging space at their home in Papamoa where they invite and share the paintings with the local community on open weekends or by appointment.
