Looking back: Western Bay of Plenty in history

This picture of a sombre group of local children is from an event around 1905.

But not much more is known about it.

The photograph is from Claudia Diggelmann’s collection and it features her father Claude Hume in the front row, third from left.

Hume Rd in Aongatete is named for the family.

It is speculated the photo could be from a camping trip (by the background tent) or a picnic outing.
