A truck containing 1000 pies is on its way to feed earthquake victims.
Mount Maunganui Bakery managing director Grant Iggulden says the pies are one way of helping the people of the devastated city.
Mr Iggulden phoned a few other local bakeries and asked them to bake about 100 pies each to
be sent down to Christchurch.
Mr Iggulden contacted Raymons Pies, Bigbake Bakery, the Bakeshack, Te Puke Bakery, Uppercrust Bakery, Maketu Pies, Gourmet Foods and Pats Pantry and all were delighted to be involved, he said. Together the bakeries made about 1000 pies, which were packed into refrigerated containers and into a Marsh Transport truck, organised by Bakels.
The truck was due to stop overnight in Palmerston North before travelling through to Christchurch today. Mr Iggulden expected the pies would reach their destination tonight.
After more than 24 hours on the road, Mr Iggulden guaranteed the stock would still be fresh when it reached Christchurch.
"The majority of them were baked first thing [yesterday] morning and they've been chilled," he said.
"They'll be fine for three or four days."
Mr Iggulden said it was a great feeling having the support of other Bay of Plenty bakeries to be able to help those in need.
"The retail price of these pies would be about three grand... but it's not about the money."
