A local company is hoping a random act of kindness can spark a Tauranga phenomenon.
Specsavers Tauranga celebrated global Pay It Forward Day giving three customers two free pairs of glasses from a ballot.
The only condition was they were asked to do another act of kindness for a stranger.
Recipients of the free glasses - Lynley Keiller, Richard McCurren and Garry Rae - yesterday passed on the favour by giving out vouchers on Devonport Rd to three strangers who each received Specsavers glasses as well.
Specsavers Tauranga co-owner Max Drennan said he hoped the offer would have a positive effect on the community.
"We're hoping to start a domino effect. It's not just about gifting glasses on a specific day it's about harnessing a sense of ... generosity that already exists in our community. Your imagination runs away, who knows where this will end," he said.
Devonport Rd recipient Georgia Scott planned to pass the voucher on to her mum, who she said deserved something nice.
"She's always out helping others without expecting anything back. She never buys anything herself," she said.
Mydawny Nairn-Kusabs had in mind a friend who was unable to do her own shopping. "I've got someone in mind. I will more than likely get her grocery shopping and I should probably treat her to some wine and nibbles," she said.
Pay it Forward Day celebrates a worldwide movement inspired by a 12-year-old American boy who had the idea that if everyone did three good deeds for strangers and asked them to do the same, the world would be a better place.
