Tauranga builder David Shaw has enjoyed regular success at the house of the year awards. But the revamped Bay of Plenty Registered Master Builders awards provided his best night.

His firm, Shaw Builders, walked away with the Bay PlaceMakers supreme prize after winning the $1-$2 million category for new homes, with the two-level house they built at Matua.

Shaw Builders also won four other awards - a gold and category win for new homes $600,000-$1 million, and best kitchen, bathroom and energy efficiency in lifestyle categories.

The Mount Maunganui home built by Shaw Builders also collected a gold in the $1-$2 million category.

Mr Shaw collected the 2007 Tauranga house of the year supreme award, but last night at the Classic Flyers Museum the regional awards were expanded to include the Rotorua and Whakatane districts, as well as Tauranga.

The judges said Shaw Builders' three-bedroom, four-bathroom Matua home was a very sharp and modern house with exquisite detailing, finished with real skill on a demanding hill site.

"Large decks provide perfect outdoor living and the infinity edge swimming pool is cleverly placed for privacy. Every corner of the section has been utilised and landscaping is simple but perfect for easy living and entertaining," the judges said.

Hawkins Construction took out the supreme RMB commercial project of the year with its construction of Papamoa College.

The judges said "walking into the front entrance of the college was like walking into a five star hotel. The builder has really taken this school environment and its facilities to a new level".

Hawkins faced time pressures and budget constraints but was innovative and the outcome was remarkable, the judges said. The school was designed and built to withstand a severe earthquake.

The national winners will be announced at a gala dinner in Auckland in November. Results below image.

The results were:

PlaceMakers Supreme Awards: House of the Year, Shaw Builders for Matua home; Commercial Project of the Year, Hawkins Construction for Papamoa College.
