The Taliban has claimed responsibility for a roadside bomb attack which has left three New Zealand soldiers dead in Afghanistan.

The trio were serving with the Provincial Reconstruction Team in Bamyan province. Their deaths come just two weeks after two other New Zealand soldiers, Lance Corporals Rory Malone and Pralli Durrer were killed in a fierce gun battle.

Chief of Defence Force Lieutenant General Rhys Jones says "we are deeply saddened by this loss'', especially given the deaths of New Zealand soldiers Lance Corporals Rory Malone and Pralli Durrer during a gunfight at Bamyan on August 4.

"I think they need to be pulled out now. 10 of NZ's soldiers killed in two years. Five of them within the last fortnight. Too many!"

"To break our promise to the Afghan people would be an insult to the ten brave Kiwis who have laid down their lives as volunteers in their mission."
