SYDNEY - Australian businessman Dick Smith's successful "wrong way" attempt to cross the Tasman by balloon in February has earned him the title of Adventurer of the Year.
Smith, who with co-pilot John Wallington began their trip from Kaitaia against the prevailing winds, was given the Gold Medallion by the Australian Geographic Society.
The society said the journey was testament to Smith's determination and zest for taking on "impossible challenges."
Smith and Wallington took 55 hours and 17 minutes to complete what was the first crossing of the Tasman by balloon.
Wallington received a Silver "Spirit of Adventure" Award, as did a group of climbers who included New Zealander Ned Norton.
The Christchurch scientist and two Australians last year made the first ascent of Pakistan's 5500m Mt Jo, which the society described as an obelisk of rock.
