A man in his early 20s has received severe bites to his leg in a suspected shark attack in northern New South Wales, Australia.

Paramedics were called to Lighthouse Beach at Ballina just after 9am today to find the man with severe bites to his upper right leg. He was treated at the scene.

All Ballina beaches have been closed.

In November young local surfer Sam Morgan was mauled at the same beach but managed to make it back to the sand where he was helped by beachgoers.

He suffered serious wounds to his left thigh and was flown to the Gold Coast University Hospital.
