RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) Police say suspected drug traffickers shot and killed the commander of a police unit in one of Rio de Janeiro's slums.
Capt. Uanderson Manoel da Silva was killed Thursday night during a shootout in the Alemao complex of slums.
Police say one man suspected of involvement in the shootout has been taken into custody.
The 34-year-old captain was the first commander of one of Rio's police pacification units to be killed in action.
Pacification units have been set up in several of Rio's slums to push out heavily armed drug dealers and organized crime groups.
