BERLIN (AP) The German government has expressed regret at the killing of an Afghan translator who was waiting to move to Germany because he feared for his life.
A Defense Ministry spokesman says the unidentified man worked for the German army until January and subsequently asked for refuge in Germany.
Ministry spokesman Christian Dienst says the man was informed Nov. 2 he would be allowed to move to Germany once certain preparations had been completed.
The man was found dead in Afghanistan's Kunduz province on Sunday.
Dienst called the man's death a "regrettable incident" Monday but said it wouldn't change Germany's assessment of the situation in Kunduz. Germany handed over responsibility for security there to Afghan authorities last month.
