The rain came down but that did not deter a group of amblers from meeting at the Whanganui riverside.
The fun day and barbecue on Saturday was organised by the Pedestrians on Wheels group and president Noeline Lane said she was delighted to see a number of new faces in attendance.
"I didn't get a chance to talk to everyone but I would say there were around 30 people there including our current members."
Like most of the people who attended, Mrs Lane rides a mobility scooter but she said people in wheelchairs and those who use walking frames are welcome to join the group.
"We have recently extended the criteria to include people who use walking frames because they have wheels too."
Pedestrians on Wheels are a support group that meets once a month for social and educational purposes.
"The meetings are informal and we invite speakers along and arrange social outings," said Mrs Lane.
"We are planning a trip to Levin at the moment."
Mrs lane said the group receives great support from Glenda Leitao of Horizons Regional Council.
"Glenda is very supportive and Horizons organise and fund an educational workshop each year.
"Whanganui District Councillor Josh Chandulal-Mackay is a great support too.
"He comes to our meetings and I tell him about things I notice when I'm out on my scooter.
"He has organised a walkway fence and had some bushes trimmed back recently."
Mr Chandulal-Mackay said he has ridden a mobility scooter with Mrs Lane and he gained some insights.
"I rode a scooter alongside Noeline from her place in Alma Rd and into town.
"It was really pleasant but I did get stuck trying to get over a kerb and rather than get off and push the scooter, I decided to test out what it would be like if I couldn't do that.
"I flagged down a passing car and they stopped to help but I realised how vulnerable people on scooters are."
Mrs Lane said she finds road workers are very helpful and they have stopped traffic and moved road cones for her.
"I love my scooter and I go out all day on it sometimes.
"As long as I have charged the battery, I can go as far as I like and my little dog Poppy sometimes hops on for a ride when she gets tired of walking."
Mrs Lane said she wanted to thank Mitre 10 for their support with the barbecue, her dad Alex Erni and 9-year-old niece Siana for cooking the sausages.
