Four Whanganui Girls' College students have won gold and silver medals at a cooking competition in Palmerston North.
The competition was hosted by UCOL, and was for secondary school students.
Under the guidance of food and hospitality tutor Nina Barbezat and chef mentor Phil Heatly, the four Year 13 won two gold medal and two silver medals over two classes of competition.
Nicole Ede won a gold medal and top-of-class in the static muffin category, with her lemon-and-poppyseed muffin, with lemon curd filling, lemon drizzle and candied lemon garnish. Nicole received a near-perfect scored of 97 out of 100.
Also scooping a gold medal and top-of-class was Libby Young in the live chicken category. Live chicken means the dish must be cooked in front of the judges within one hour. Libby's dish was grilled rosemary chicken with a bacon and leek risotto and sauteed spinach and rosemary creme, and for that she got 91 points out of 100.
