The Whanganui Film Society's offering for next week is About Elly.
The film is the 2009 Iranian drama/mystery from director Asghar Farhadi. Farhadi just won the 2017 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film for The Salesman (accepted in absentia due to boycotting the travel ban). This is his second win in that category - his first was for the 2011 drama A Separation.
The thriller centres on a group of freinds and their children heading off on a weekend to the coast. Elly, a teacher, is the newcomer to the group.
Despite winning international awards for Best Director at the Berlin Film Festival and Best Feature at Tribeca, About Elly's release in the West was held back, in part due to political tensions, so is finally finding an audience outside festival circuits.
About Elly will screen at Whanganui Film Society, Davis Theatre, Whanganui Regional Museum at 7pm on Monday.
