Whanganui's volunteers were celebrated at an event at Castlecliff beach yesterday.
Around 50 volunteers were treated to a barbecue lunch at the Duncan Pavilion to mark International Volunteer Day.
Sandra Rickey from the Whanganui Volunteer Centre said Whanganui has the highest number of volunteers per capita of any city in New Zealand. Nearly 700 individual volunteers and 100 non-profit organisations are registered with Volunteer Whanganui.
The event also served as the official opening for the Whanganui Volunteer Centre's Castlecliff "office", as Ms Rickey will be spending every Thursday at the Duncan Pavilion.
"I got a call from someone asking if we have an office in Castlecliff. And I thought about it and decided it would be a good idea. So we have the pavilion for a year.
