Wanganui's best young cyclists were put through their paces yesterday during the Cyclist of the Year competition.
Co-organiser Glenda Leitao from Horizons Regional Council said 14 students from seven schools took part in the bike skills test at Laird Park.
Each participant had to sit a theory test worth 40 points and a practical test worth 60 points.
"In the practical test the students had to navigate as if they were really on the road.
"They had to be able to control their bikes. We found that some students were very good at one but not as strong on the other."
