Term one ended on a high note for Wanganui families who took part in Operation Self Driven, an initiative to reduce the number of children taken to school by car.
It is supported by Horizons Regional Council, BP, Mars Petcare, The Bike Shed, Downer, Totalspan, Bluelight, Steelformers and Mitre 10.
Primary school pupils who walked, cycled or rode their scooters to school at least three out of five days a week went into the draw for a $10 petrol voucher and those whose parents left the car at home every school day could win a $20 voucher. All participants went in the draw to win one of three BMX-style bikes and the winners received their bikes at Majestic Square last week.
Constable Rob Conder said the operation had been a success, with families experiencing the advantages of travelling to school on foot when they accompanied their child. "The petrol vouchers were a great incentive for parents, because they were already saving on fuel by not driving to school every day, and it means they had extra for weekend activities. The children who won the bikes were delighted and I hear that Jed Whiteman has reserved a special place in the family living room for his one."
There were a number of spot prizes awarded and Mr Conder said the sponsors were delighted with the success of the project.
