There is always plenty of positive learning at Tawhero School, and last week the students created artworks for Puanga/Matariki with ceramicist Wi Taepa.
Mr Taepa was making kites with the Years 3, 4 and 6 students, and weaver Tanya Milne of the Community Art Centre was in the hall creating a waka. The works will go on display in Trafalgar Square on June 18, following the dawn karakia by the the riverside to welcome the Maori new year.
"Our old people used kites for many things," Mr Taepa said.
On the sails of the kite were traditional Maori designs.
The children will be taking home their small kites and will keep their special taonga to celebrate Puanga/Matariki, when they will remember those who have gone while welcoming the new year. Ms Milne said the project was funded by Creative Communities.
