They came in all shapes, size, colours and ages - but all the teddy bears at the teddy bears picnic in Kowhai Park yesterday were well loved.
About 70 teddy bears (and their owners) went to the picnic, which was hosted by the Lions Club as a fundraiser for Plunket Wanganui.
There was face painting, a sausage sizzle, bouncy castle, train rides, story telling, and a teddy bear competition, with everything costing just a gold coin donation.
Organiser Nicola Young said the teddy bears' picnic came at the end of a week-long fundraising event by Plunket - an important part of the organisation's funding.
"We receive government funding for our basic functions, but for services above that we have to fundraise for. That's things like parenting classes, playgroups and carseat services."
Mrs Young said last year's fundraising week raised $5000 and she hoped this year's would have raised even more.
"Everything we raise goes to local Plunket services," she said.
She said she was grateful to the volunteers who helped Plunket, particularly the Lions Club which had hosted the teddy bears' picnic.
"We're constantly amazed by people's generosity."
Mrs Young said was delighted by the number of families who had brought teddies.
Plunket life member, 96-year-old Lenore Stewart gave out prizes for the best teddies - there were prizes for the biggest, smallest, most colourful and oldest teddy bears.
