AgResearch has been given the go ahead to carry out tests of genetically modified sheep near Hamilton.
The Environmental Risk Management Authority has approved field testing on up to 100 sheep in a registered containment facility at Ruakura over a 5-year period.
ERMA Chief Executive Bas Walker says the scientific work will look at what happens when you modify the inactive myostatin gene which influences the way muscles develop.
He says the tests will be carried out under a range of strict conditions and the sheep will be surrounded by a double perimeter fence.
