An Auckland insurance broker has come to the rescue of two youngsters who missed out on a trip to Disneyland for terminally ill children because they could not get travel insurance.
Atalia Vulu, aged 9, of Rotorua, and Shannon Brandt, 10, of Hamilton, were told by Koru Care last week that they could not go on the trip because the charitable trust's insurance company would not cover their medical expenses if they became ill in the United States.
The owner of Downunder World Wide Travel Insurance, Stuart Mitchell, yesterday offered medical cover to both girls. Atalia has Lupus Syndrome, an immune system disorder, and Shannon has leukaemia.
Mr Mitchell said: "It's our business to insure people for travelling. What's the point of [Koru Care] offering these kids lovely trips if they then can't insure them. It's ridiculous."
Shannon's mother, Denise Brandt, said it was too late to send her daughter to Disneyland because the other 22 children would have already formed a bond.
