Imported pork can be called a product of New Zealand if it is made into sausages, bacon and ham once it reaches our shores.
Jim Hopkins spoke to The Country's Jamie Mackay today about how much of New Zealand's pork products are actually from overseas suppliers.
There are 103 farms in New Zealand that rear pigs but only 42 per cent of pork, bacon and ham purchased here is locally produced says Hopkins.
However, there is a way to tell if your pig product is local. Jim Hopkins says the Pork Council has a method of certifying if an animal is born and raised in New Zealand - the trust mark.
