A Carterton man says he is lucky to be alive after he crashed into a herd of cows which had escaped during high winds.
Geoff Bradbury was returning from a hunting trip when he collided with a group of cows which had escaped onto SH2 near Mt Bruce after an internal fence was knocked over by a falling tree on May 14.
Two cows were killed on impact and three were later put down but Mr Bradbury escaped injury.
Mr Bradbury said it was a dramatic event for all involved.
"It was an awful event for the farmer and it was quite a dramatic event for me," Mr Bradbury said.
