Miley Cyrus's eyebrow-raising performance at the MTV VMAs was a twerk too far for Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour.
Well, at least that's according to word around the campfire.
Per the Mail Online, the 20-year-old former Disney star had reportedly been photographed for the December issue of the fashion bible, before her now-infamous performance at the VMA Awards last month.
Unless you've been living under a rock for the past couple of weeks, you'll no doubt have Cyrus's twerk-filled act indelibly etched in your memory. She came, she twerked with giant teddy bears, she gyrated in a flesh-coloured latex bikini against pop star Robin Thicke's crotch; she went to town with that wayward foam finger. She conquered.
But Cyrus's sexed-up routine drew plenty of ire from certain quarters. And according to the Mail Online, you can add notoriously chilly editrix Anna Wintour to the list of finger-waggers.
According to the website, Wintour had been eager to champion Cyrus "as a new fashion icon", but changed her mind "after witnessing the singer perform her overtly sexual routine in latex bra and knickers."
"Anna found the whole thing distasteful," the website quoted a so-called "insider" as saying. "She decided, based on Miley's performance, to take the cover in a different direction."
A spokesperson for Vogue declined to chime in on the report, telling Access Hollywood: "Unfortunately we are unable to comment on rumours about future editorials."
According to Gossip Cop, they needn't bother.
The website, citing a "source close to the situation", has called BS on the Mail's yarn.
"Miley was never scheduled for December Vogue," says the source, adding that Cyrus was not photographed for the magazine.
Cyrus recently spoke out to address reaction to her controversial performance at the MTV VMAs.
"I don't pay attention to the negative," the singer said during her interview with MTV.
"Madonna's done it, Britney's done it. Every VMA performance, anyone that performs, that's what you're looking for - you're wanting to make history. Me and Robin [Thicke] the whole time said, 'You know we're about to make history right now,'" she added.
Despite the brouhaha, Cyrus said she wasn't dwelling on it.
"What's amazing is, I think, now, we're three days later and people are still talking about it. They're overthinking it," she continued.
"You're thinking about it more than I thought about it when I did it. Like, I didn't even think about it, 'cause that's just me."
Meanwhile, while you're down here, check out Cyrus in the just-released video for her new track Wrecking Ball. She's traded twerking for stripping down to her birthday suit and straddling a giant wrecking ball. Oh, and she's taken a bit of a fancy to a sledgehammer.
