SANTIAGO - Prime Minister Helen Clark capped her visit to Chile by securing a commitment from new President Ricardo Lagos to take a fresh look at entering formal negotiations for a free trade agreement.
The move could be a stepping stone for New Zealand exporters into the huge markets of Latin America.
Helen Clark met Mr Lagos shortly before departing for home. She emerged from the meeting confident that she had stepped up movement on deal that could be a three-way accord, known as P3, involving Singapore.
Helen Clark said the President had told her he regarded a "special relationship" with New Zealand as a priority for his new Government.
